ENGAGE

See- http://www.engage.ac.uk

Aims of the ENGAGE project:

(UK-based, JISC-funded run by OMII-UK SOTON with NGS)

Engage with lapsed and potential new users of e-Infrastructure

Conduct a wider analysis of e-Research technical requirements

Empower researchers to exploit benefits of available e-Infrastructure through:

- Determining detailed requirements for specific research projects
- Designing possible solutions in conjunction with research communities
- Integrating software and developing tools to address identified requirements
- Delivering and deploying new software solutions on NGS infrastructure
- Build new capacity in NGS and OMII-UK to better deliver future e-Research solutions

The ENGAGE project comprises a broad set of tasks in order to achieve its aims; these can broadly be grouped into three phases:

1) The first part of the project will involve a set of interviews of UK academics (information gathering) - ~50 to date
2) A set of best practice information distilled from these interviews will be disseminated through the project website and used to promote ongoing discussion (best practice information) – analysis underway: see http://www.engage.ac.uk over next 5-6 months for results
3) The creation and deployment of a small set of domain focused systems which enable a new set of academics to utilise e-Infrastructure in pursuit of their research results. (new domain-specific systems) – handful of projects over next 5 months

The GENIE proposal is one of a handful of potential proposals that may be taken forward under the third phase of ENGAGE described above. A brief proposal needs to be sketched out and submitted to the ENGAGE board with a view to runinnig during the first 5 months of next year. The proposal should have a clear goal that overcomes some existing barriers to Grid uptake.
